Hungary-Greece 2-2, 1999
vacuum cast, PVC
This is a both simple and aggressive piece. We see six figures wearing masks. They are divided into two teams. One team wears masks fashioned after the Delphoi Charioteer and is dressed in Greek national colours, while the other team wears masks resembling the Saint Ladislas herma, and is dressed in Hungarian national colours. The faces cannot be seen, as they are only the bearers of the masks. The two groups of counterposed heads thus give the impression of a fictitious sports event in which the fans paint their national colours on themselves: in this way the match or contest becomes a struggle between nations, cultures, and ideologies.
